Historically, the name "spaghetto" is officially mentioned in the first dictionary of the Italian language by Nicolò Tommaseo and Bernardo Bellini (1819). Here, the word "spaghetto" is listed as the "masculine singular diminutive of spago" (thread) and mentions "Spaghetti soup: pasta the size of a small string and long, like sopracapellini" (thread). A curiosity: in 1957, the BBC broadcast the first documentary on spaghetti production, and the next day, TV studios were inundated with calls from viewers asking for the names of spaghetti producers and distributors so they could buy them. Spaghetti is so versatile that it can be served with any condiment, from fish to meat, from vegetables to cheese, but it is also excellent enjoyed plain, seasoned with just extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese.
